What's different about him

Jimothy has short spine syndrome, a real, rare condition, not a costume and not a filter. Here's what that actually means, from the people who study it.

A shortened spine, from birth

Short spine syndrome is a rare congenital condition: the spine doesn't form the usual way in the womb, leaving an animal with vertebrae that are compressed, fused, or missing. The limbs grow to normal length, but the back doesn't, which is why Jimothy looks round and low to the ground, with almost no visible neck. Penn State ecologist Julian Avery described the developing spine as being like a tube of dough pinched off at intervals into segments; in short spine syndrome, that process goes wrong.

It's genetic, and extraordinarily rare

The condition is caused by a recessive gene, so an animal needs two copies, one from each parent, for it to appear at all. That's uncommon on its own, and rarer still because affected animals face real challenges surviving in the wild. Researchers at UC Davis traced the mutation in dogs through a litter of short-spined puppies. It's the same condition that more often shows up in dogs than in raccoons. One UK vet noted they'd never seen a single case in a career treating thousands of animals.

He is, by all accounts, fine

This is the part worth holding onto. Experts who've watched the footage say animals with short spine syndrome generally have normal brain function and normal internal organs. The condition changes the shape of the back, not the health of the animal underneath. Avery put it plainly: there's no reason to think Jimothy's lungs or brain are affected, and he'd expect him to live a normal life. A raccoon foraging confidently across a Seattle neighbourhood is a raccoon that's making it work.

The one thing you can do for him

Don't feed him, and don't crowd him. Experts are clear that the biggest risk to Jimothy isn't his spine. It's people. Feeding a wild raccoon or drawing a crowd makes it more likely he gets too close to cars, pets, or trouble. Watch from a distance, and let him be the neighbourhood raccoon he already is.
